The Burgess Bird Book for Children is a gem! While I read it to them, Hannah and Will flip through the guide books looking for pictures of the birds mentioned in the story.
Hannah uses Peterson's Field Guide.
We gather around the computer to find out more and listen to bird calls and songs. enature.com and allaboutbirds.org are our favorites.
I love to make connections for my kids. So, we are studying John James Audubon for our September Artist Study. The Boy Who Drew Birds is a beautiful book.

Now I need to figure out how to rig a bird feeder that feeds birds and not squirrels (or rats - aah, city life!). Ideas?

ReplyDeleteI've had luck with safflower. I use it in all my non- squirrel proof feeders. It's a tad more expensive, but the squirrels don't seem to care for it (to them it tastes bitter).
ReplyDeleteI also have a feeder called the Squirrel Buster (available at most birding stores-- check out Wild Birds Unlimited, for instance) and it works beautifully. I use it to feed the cardinals (my favorites!) and all the little guys. It's worth looking in to~
